Jember – In a vibrant gathering of minds and spirits, Pondok Pesantren Baitul Arqom in Balung, Jember, hosted an international seminar featuring Dr. Zaid Cherif, a distinguished scholar in Hadith, Qur’anic exegesis, and Arabic linguistics from Ibn Tofail University, Morocco. The seminar was not only an academic exchange, but also a moment of profound admiration and cultural resonance.
From the very beginning, Dr. Zaid Cherif was deeply impressed by the warm and enthusiastic welcome he received from the pesantren’s leadership, teachers, and students. “The hospitality here is not only traditional—it is deeply spiritual,” he remarked. “It reflects a culture that honors knowledge and scholars with sincerity and love.”
One of the highlights of his visit was witnessing firsthand the linguistic courage and fluency of the students. In the Q&A session, santri and santriwati confidently responded in eloquent Arabic, engaging Dr. Zaid in meaningful and respectful dialogue. Their ability to speak directly, without hesitation, in classical Arabic left a strong impression on the Moroccan scholar. “It is rare to find such confidence in Arabic outside the Arab world,” he noted. “These students are not only learning a language—they are living it.”
In addition to the intellectual atmosphere, Dr. Zaid was struck by the pesantren’s harmonious integration of education and ecology. Built within a lush and fertile natural environment, Baitul Arqom has managed to preserve the surrounding ecosystem while developing a sustainable model of food security. The school cultivates its own crops, manages livestock, and encourages students to take part in community-based agriculture—fostering both practical skills and environmental awareness.
“This is a true model of hikmah (wisdom),” said Dr. Zaid. “The way this pesantren balances faith, intellect, and nature is something the whole Muslim world can learn from.”
Perhaps most remarkable to him was Baitul Arqom’s support for student-led entrepreneurship. He witnessed how the pesantren empowers young people to create and manage small businesses—from culinary products to handicrafts—that have already reached international markets. The integration of religious values, business ethics, and global ambition is one of the institution’s proudest achievements.
Dr. Zaid concluded his visit with a hopeful message: “The world needs more educational institutions like Baitul Arqom—where tradition and innovation walk hand in hand, where the Qur’an meets sustainability, and where the next generation of Muslim leaders are being shaped with heart, intellect, and action.” (*)
